Following graduation from Appalachian State University, Dr. Martin earned the Master of Divinity and the Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been very active as a leader at the state and national level in the Southern Baptist Convention.

Since Dr. Martin came to Village Baptist Church in 1991, average attendance has increased from 330 to over 1,300 each Sunday.

He and his wife, Brenda, were both born in North Carolina. They have one son.
